How reading time is worked out

Reading time is words divided by reading speed. The default of 238 words a minute is the average for silent reading of non-fiction in English found in Marc Brysbaert's 2019 review of 190 studies. Speaking time uses 140 words a minute, a comfortable pace for a talk or a video script. Change either to suit your audience.

Words are counted as runs of characters separated by spaces that contain at least one letter or number, so a lone dash or emoji isn't a word.
